WHAT: 5 meter COP26 cow tour of Glasgow; activists will join the cow in a Plant Based Treaty dance

WHERE: Across the river from the SEC conference building, STV, Finnieston St, Glasgow
WHY: Animal agriculture is one of the key contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, yet world leaders at COP26 are refusing to acknowledge the cow in the conference room. The Plant Based Treaty organisers will discuss why it’s imperative to move to a plant-based food system now and answer journalists’ questions.
The inflatable 5 meter cow has been popping up around Glasgow. She was in George’s Square on Tuesday and at the STV building opposite the COP26 SEC building on Wednesday and will appear there again on Thursday morning.
Plant Based Treaty campaigner, Simone Scampoli says, “We need to talk about the cow in the room which is animal agriculture. Glasgow has lots of vegan options, the COP26 conference should have followed suit. It is vital to lead by example and negotiate a Plant Based Treaty for all the world. We plastered Glasgow with a lot of Plant Based Treaty stickers and distributed 20,000 Plant Based Treaty Guides to Glasgow.”
In a statement earlier this week, Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney said, “We believe in justice for animals, the environment and people. That’s why we support the Plant-Based Treaty and urge individuals and governments to sign it.”
This week George Monbiot pledged his support for the Plant Based Treaty, he said:
“I’m backing the Plant Based Treaty, which urges leaders to recognise animal agriculture as a leading cause of climate change and promotes a shift towards sustainable vegan meals. We must all do our part to protect the planet – and cutting out meat, eggs, and dairy is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help. Animal agriculture is responsible for sky-high carbon emissions as well as the suffering of billions of animals each year. If COP26 organisers are serious about preventing an imminent climate catastrophe, they must address the elephant in the room: so long as we raise and kill animals for food, we’re putting our future at risk.”
Plant Based Treaty communications director Nicola Harris said, “We call on COP26 delegates to follow the lead of the 18MPs who have signed EDM434 in support of the Plant Based Treaty. Momentum is building with endorsements from two cities, George Monbiot, William Ripple and IPCC scientists. Now we need world leaders to pay attention to the cow in the room and negotiate a Plant Based Treaty to avert a climate catastrophe.”
