May 24, Nova Lima, Brazil — In the midst of a growing climate emergency, the city of Nova Lima, located in Minas Gerais, Brazil, has taken an unprecedented lead by becoming the first city in Latin America to endorse the Plant Based Treaty. This international agreement proposes essential and structural food solutions to combat the climate crisis, promote environmental and climate justice and guarantee a truly sustainable future for all.
The endorsement presents bold and transformative commitments. Among them is the promotion of the production and consumption of plant-based foods through educational initiatives, public awareness campaigns and the strengthening of school programs aimed at healthier and more sustainable diets. It also includes support for agroecology and family farming, valuing traditional knowledge and providing technical assistance to promote more resilient and balanced livelihoods.
Another central aspect is the integration of food security into climate crisis mitigation strategies, adopting inclusive and regenerative practices adapted to local realities. The treaty also recognizes animal welfare as a guiding principle for public policies, aligning ethics, public health and environmental justice in a comprehensive and cohesive commitment.
Mayor João Marcelo Dieguez Pereira stressed the municipality’s responsibility in the face of the climate scenario and the visibility that Brazil will have at COP 30: “We are taking an unequivocal stance in defence of life, public health, the future of the planet and the dignity of all species,” and added: “The endorsement of the Plant Based Treaty expresses our commitment to a development model that recognizes the limits of the planet and places responsibility at the heart of public policies. This is a strategic moment, a historic opportunity for Brazil to assume environmental leadership, and we want Nova Lima to be at the forefront of this transformation.”
Nova Lima’s Secretary for the Environment, Gabriel Coutinho, added: “Our commitment to sustainability is genuine and permanent. Facing the climate crisis requires boldness to innovate and openness to evolve. The adoption of the Plant Based Treaty reflects the path that Nova Lima has been taking with responsibility and empathy.”
Nova Lima, which is part of the Belo Horizonte metropolitan region, has already been recognized for its innovative public policies. With the highest per capita income in Brazil, the municipality combines planned urbanization, environmental conservation and socio-environmental inclusion initiatives.
Nova Lima’s endorsement comes at a time of rapid global change, where the leadership of cities can serve as a decisive example to inspire municipal, state and federal governments. Anita Krajnc, global coordinator of the Plant Based Treaty, said: “Nova Lima paves the way for all of Latin America. Its example shows that it is possible to lead with courage and sensitivity in the face of the climate emergency and the need to transform our food production and promote diet change.”
Silvana Andrade, founder of ANDA (Animal Rights News Agency) and one of the campaign’s main supporters in Brazil, highlighted the strategic importance of the endorsement: “Nova Lima demonstrates that it is possible to develop public policies that transcend economic logic, prioritizing the preservation of life, collective well-being and environmental equity. This initiative gains even more relevance at a time when Brazil is in the global spotlight, serving as a reference for concrete processes of just transition. It’s a local action with international impact and reach.”
May this initiative serve as an example and encourage other Brazilian cities to adopt bold, ethical and transformative climate commitments. Nova Lima is positioning itself as a pioneer, anticipating the future and building it with courage, responsibility and determination.

O documento apresenta compromissos ousados e transformadores.
Anita Krajnc, coordenadora global do Plant Based Treaty, declarou: “Nova Lima abre caminho para toda a América Latina.
